2nd announcement

The recent exhibition “Bronzes français : de la Renaissance au siècle des lumières" (Musée du Louvre)/ "Cast in Bronze : French Sculpture from Renaissance to Revolution" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, 2007-2008) helped to refine and deepen our understanding of so-called “French” bronzes and also pointed towards important new avenues of investigation. Taking advantage of the momentum generated by the show, a three-day international symposium will be held at the Musée du Louvre and at the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France in June 2012.

We are aiming to bring together a diverse group of specialists -- e.g., historians (of technology, art, trade, ideas), conservation scientists, curators, and conservator-restorers -- to engage in an inter-disciplinary exchange to promote further research into the development and cross fertilization of ideas and technology related to the making of bronzes in France -- and by French artists abroad -- from the Renaissance to the 18th century.

The first day will consist of invited lectures held at the Louvre for a more general audience (See Program), followed by two days at the C2RMF which will focus on more specialized topics and case studies (Monday and Tuesday, 11-12 June). An excursion is proposed for Sunday, 10 June (details to follow in the next announcement).
